Barn Signs are the advertising “billboards” that are hand painted on the side of the Barn Theater at the base of the UCSC campus.
A well designed billboard can be a highly visible way to get the word out to hundreds of commuters and visitors who pass the Barn Theater each day in buses, bikes, and cars.
Barn Signs are available for a flat fee on a first-come, first-served basis. Any campus department, organization, or campus-sponsored event is welcome to request a billboard space.
The Arts Division has first priority for available space on the Barn, but we are usually able to accommodate 5–9 signs for other campus units each quarter.
The Arts Division uses the Barn to promote plays and concerts. Most campus units use the space to promote events such as film festivals and lectures, and some campus groups use the Barn Sign to remind students of upcoming deadlines for housing or EAP applications.

Every barn sign is painted by hand, and if your art is very complex, has many layers of colors, lots of lettering, or a detailed image, then it takes our painter, Jim, more time to complete. Consequently, it may cost more. While the design you create for your barn sign is entirely up to you, it is important to realize that the more detailed it is, the more time it takes our painter to paint it.
Below are copies of actual signs that have appeared on the barn and their average cost to the user. Please use these examples to guage the price of the sign you create. Once we have received your art, we will forward it to the painter for a cost estimate and get back to you as soon as possible.
