Brief Biography: David Evan Jones is a composer of instrumental, vocal, and electronic music and a theorist writing about relationships between phonetics and music. His primary teachers were Roger Reynolds, Robert Erickson, and Pauline Oliveros at the University of California San Diego, where he studied and served as Technical Coordinator at the Center for Music Experiment.

In 1980-81, he was Composer-in-Residence at the University of York, England. He has subsequently taught at Dartmouth College and now at the University of California Santa Cruz.

Jones' works have been recognized by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts (1979, 1982, 1988), the California Arts Council (1979), and the New Hampshire Arts Council (1986), and by an invitation to present two full concerts of his works at the Festival d'Automne in Paris (1979).

He has been awarded first prize in the Premio Ancona (1983) International Composition Competition (Italy, 1983) and first prize in the competition sponsored by the American New Music Consortium (New York, 1985). He has composed in residence at the Elektronmusikstudion (EMS), Stockholm (1985) and at L'Institut de Recherche et de Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM), Paris (1986). His articles have appeared in Perspectives of New Music and Electro-Acoustic Music.

His compositions are published by Dorn Publications, and on compact discs from Wergo Records, Contemporary Recording Studios (Broomall, PA), Centaur Records, and CRI.


Jones' chamber opera, "Bardos" was recently staged. Still images from the production are available, as well as a video sample and audio samples.
