The UC Santa Cruz Department of Music proudly presents the 2003 Pacific Rim Music Festival, a truly international celebration of contemporary music of the Pacific Rim. This month-long festival features concert, symposia, and lectures focussing on the rich traditions and vast new musical directions from the Pacific Rim. We begin with a very special occasion: the 80th birthday of distinguished Chinese composer Chou Wen-Chung in a concert of works by his close friends, colleagues, and students. The festival then wends its way through deep and varied offerings, and closes with a spectacular program for solo piano by Canadia artist Eve Egoyan. This year also marks the 100th anniversary of Korean immigration to the United States, and the festival also honors the Korean Immigration Centennial Celebration whose goal is to increase cross0cultural understanding and to promote greater appreciation for the contributions of Koreans to American culture. The festival will feature ten Korean composers and artists, and collaborate with the International Women Composers' Festival in Seoul, Korea and the Korean Society for Women Composers to present a special concert on "World Women in Music Today." I hope you will join me and a distinguished array of performing artists and composers from around the Pacific Rim. Hi Kyung
Kim
