Alumni Blueprints for Dance

Choreographer and UCSC alumnus David Herrera joins guest and faculty choreographers exploring interactions among people, communities and nature in Blueprints, the spring faculty dance concert running Friday, May 24 — Sunday, June 2.

The artistic director of David Herrera Performance Company and his assistant director, fellow UCSC alumna Jean Johnstone, have created a commissioned work for the current crop of UCSC student dancers. Herrera's company recently received a Zellerbach Family Foundation grant for the creation of "the Stranger (Part 1)," and the UCSC performance will showcase Herrera's use of multi-media elements that speak in emotionally textured gestures to contemporary American society.

The Blueprints concert offers the work of Herrera and Johnstone, as well as choreography by Mandjou Koné, Cid Perlman and theater arts professor Ted Warburton. In collaboration with musician Karlton Hester, DANM lecturer Drew Detweiler and astrophysics professor Greg Laughlin, Warburton has crafted a multi-media kinetic exploration of mathematical puzzles entitled Three Bodies.
