Arts Dean's Fund for Excellence

Arts Dean David Yager established the Arts Dean’s Fund for Excellence in 2011. This fund supports faculty and student research opportunities that would otherwise not be possible. In 2013-14, over $65,000 was distributed to more than 40 individual projects. The Arts Dean’s Fund for Excellence is entirely donor funded. The Dean’s Office is extremely grateful for the generous support of our contributors whose funding has played a significant role in the success of several dozen faculty members and hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. Applications for funds are reviewed once a month (typically in the last week of each month).

Project Eligibility:

Arts Faculty may apply for funds in support of any high-quality research or creative project.  While funds are available to support the early stages of faculty projects, we are particularly interested in the dissemination of faculty research and creative work. In the last few years the fund has enabled faculty to travel to distant locales for their research, provided subventions for publications, and funds to offset costs associated with staging exhibitions, concerts, and performances. The fund has also facilitated a host of symposia and festivals, circulating faculty research to a wide range of academic and lay audiences both in Santa Cruz and around the globe.

Arts Graduate and Undergraduate Students may apply for funds to support the dissemination of their research.  The fund provides aid for students to participate in professional conferences, pay for image reproduction rights, or the costs associated with exhibitions, or those incurred in the acceptance of internships.  On occasion, we consider requests for language study abroad when it is not practical to study the language in the U.S.  We typically do not fund student requests to support the initial stages of research or creative projects, unless it is to serve as a match for previously secured external funds.  In recent years, the fund has allowed graduate students to present at professional conferences in Mexico, France, Germany and throughout the United States. A Ph.D. student in Film and Digital Media was able to screen a film at the Cannes Festival and several students were able to accept unpaid internships in Los Angles and New York.

Projects from faculty and students from outside the Division will be considered on a case-by-case basis based on their ability to enrich the culture of the Arts on campus.

The fund also awards noncompetitive grants in support of Divisional priorities. The Arts Dean’s Fund for Excellence ensures that Shakespeare To Go, our touring education and outreach program that brings Shakespearean plays to local middle and high schools, continues to enrich public education through arts performances staged by Santa Cruz undergraduates.  In addition, the fund has supported both visiting artists and a postdoctoral fellow. The artists residency has brought innovative practitioners to campus to work with graduate and undergraduate students during stays lasting anywhere from a weekend to a ten-week quarter. These artists taught, lectured, listened, watched, critiqued, performed, and influenced hundreds of students across campus. The postdoctoral program has engaged recent Ph.D.’s to gain teaching experience while being mentored by senior faculty in their fields. The program has provided our students with access to emerging scholarly voices while helping the postdocs professionalize on route to tenure-track positions.
