Documentary Editing with Maureen Gosling

Maureen Gosling has been a filmmaker for thirty-seven years and an editor for thirty years. She directed and produced Blossoms of Fire, 2000 (HBO Latino, Spanish TVE, Swedish Television, Venezuelan Television), a feature-length documentary tribute to the Isthmus Zapotecs of southern Oaxaca, Mexico.  She is also known for her twenty-year collaboration with San Francisco Bay Area director Les Blank on more than two dozen documentaries, including the British Academy Award winning feature length documentary Burden of Dreams.

The presentation will focus on documentary editing styles, as seen in a variety of examples from Gosling's current work as an editor, director, and/or producer. She will screen sample tapes she has edited this year for the films Bamako Chic: Women Cloth Dyers of MaliSalmon BoyGood Germs, Bad Germs5 Variations on a Long String, and No Mouse Music! The Story of Chris Strachwitz and Arhoolie Records. The examples represent different editing styles, from journalistic to experimental, and will allow the opportunity to discuss how Gosling worked with the different directors.

Sponsored by Film & Digital Media and Porter College.

This event is free and open to the public.
