UCSC's Patrice Maginnis, guest singers Michele Rivard and Sheila Willey, and accompanist Michael McGushin return to the UCSC Recital Hall stage after last spring's hit "Women on the Verge."
This time they will perform more of their favorite music — from Mozart to Motown, Brahms to Bernstein, and George Gershwin to Judy Collins. Join them for a fast-paced exploration of a world where no borders exist between musical styles and time periods.

Patrice Maginnis has been on the faculty of UC Santa Cruz since fall 1986 where she has taught voice, opera production, repertoire, and recital preparation. As a performer, Ms. Maginnis has sung leading roles with Opera San Jose, Ensemble Parallele, the Santa Cruz County Symphony, New Music Works, the Santa Cruz Baroque Festival, and the Santa Cruz Chamber Players. She has also performed recitals and given master classes in Germany and Montreal. Ms. Maginnis has been a featured artist on many recordings, including the opera Rapunzel by Lou Harrison in which she sang the title role. Other recordings include the music of Darius Milhaud, Eric Satie, Henry Cowell, and Germaine Tailleferre.
Michael McGushin is a music instructor at Cabrillo College and the coach/accompanist for the Music Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is the conductor of the chamber choir Ariose and of Cabrillo’s Westside Choir. From 2002-2004 he served as the director of the Full Spectrum Chorus of Santa Cruz. He has served as music director for a number of theater and opera productions in the Santa Cruz area. As a pianist, Michael is a long-time member of the New Music Works Ensemble for which he also serves as an artistic advisor, and has appeared with many performing groups in the Santa Cruz and Monterey County areas. He is a featured performer on recordings of chamber music by Paul Bowles, Lou Harrison and Germaine Tailleferre.
Michele Rivard, mezzo soprano, has appeared with the Santa Cruz Symphony, Cabrillo Music Festival, New Music Works, Trinity Chamber Orchestra, Novato Lyric Opera, Woodminster Summer Theatre, Distinguished Artists Concert & Lecture Series, Cabaret Santa Cruz, and the UCSC and Cabrillo College Orchestras. For 20 years she performed with and was vocal coach for Cabrillo Stage Summer Musical Theatre. Her vocal jazz quartet, Mainswing, has appeared at the Monterey Jazz Festival, Santa Cruz Jazz Festival, and Kuumbwa Jazz Center. She teaches musical theatre voice at Santa Clara University. Michele is the Music Department Chair at Cabrillo College where she teaches classical and popular voice.
Soprano Sheila Willey enjoys singing a wide range of repertoire. Last season Miss Willey sang the role of Cunegonde in Candide with Cinnabar Opera Theatre and appeared with the Santa Cruz Baroque Festival. She performed the role of the Contessa in last spring’s production of The Marriage of Figaro at UCSC. Miss Willey has performed new works with the New Music Works ensemble, the Worn Chamber Ensemble and Ensemble Paralléle. She has sung various opera roles professionally throughout the Bay Area. Miss Willey holds degrees from UC Santa Cruz and the Peabody Conservatory. In addition to her performing career, she directs the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church choir and the Fiat Musica women’s choir and maintains a private voice studio in Santa Cruz.
