Public Doors and Windows in Conversation with Lydia Matthews

A free public talk about the innovative campus-wide art project, Collective Museum
Thursday, February 11, 2016 - 4:00pm to 5:00pm
Digital Arts Research Center (DARC) 108
Presented by:
Institute of the Arts and Sciences

Public Doors and Windows (PDW) is a collaborative art group from Portland, Oregon. Harrell Fletcher, Molly Sherman, and Nolan Calisch, the artists who make up PDW, will be in conversation with Lydia Matthews, Professor of Visual Culture and Director of the Curatorial Design Research Lab at Parsons School of Design, The New School on February 11, 4 pm, DARC 108.

This free public talk will provide an introduction to PDW's ambitious Collective Museum. This art project spans UC Santa Cruz’s 2001 acres and, as the artists explain, “takes the campus from having no museum to having one of the largest museums in the world.”

To re-envision the university as a museum, PDW collected stories from faculty, staff, students, and alumni about 50 sites on campus.  They range from the site of the first international meeting to discuss sequencing the human genome; sites of academic and personal experiences of students, staff, and faculty; and natural sites such as the mysterious mima mounds on the southwest of the campus.

The surprising and vast campus-wide installation is complete with signage, a photo exhibition dispersed through five university buildings, a museum tour, a print-on-demand catalogue, and a mobile website: iascollectivemuseum.com.

Lydia Matthews, a prominent, long-time theorist and curator of socially engaged art projects and practice, will help provide context for this project within the history of social practice art in the United States, while discussing with the artists their motivations and goals at UCSC.
