Thumri and Khayal – Indian vocal music

Indian vocalist Purnima Chaudhuri is a highly respected senior artist whose performances are in demand in India and worldwide. She specializes in Classical and semi-classical forms of Hindustani music known as Khayal and Thumri. Her appearances at numerous national and regional festivals and conferences, on the BBC, and on television, are well known, and she has concertized extensively in India. Internationally, she has been a featured artist in Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangladesh, Paris, Amsterdam, and across Latin America. In the UK, the Asian Music Circuit sponsored her appearances at the Asia Festival of The Commonwealth Institute, London Collegium, and the Universities of Oxford and Sussex. In the United States, she has performed for a Thumri evening organized by the Indian Embassy, Washington, D.C., and in New York City, Toronto, and Ottowa. In a previous visit to California, she was a featured artist at the University of California World Conference of Indian Art & Culture (sponsored by India Council for Cultural Relations) and the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael.  Beyond her remarkable performances, she is famed for her clinics, master classes, and workshops, and she is enjoyed worldwide for her numerous recorded performances on Indian and French labels.
