History of Art and Visual Culture

Nicholas Mirzoeff is Professor of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University, Steinhardt School and Deputy Director of the International Association for Visual Culture. He has authored several texts contributing to the formation of visual culture studies as an academic discipline, including An Introduction to Visual Culture, The Visual Culture Reader, and The Right to Look: A Counterhistory of Visuality, which won the Anne Friedberg Award for Innovative Scholarship from the Society of Cinema and Media Studies (2013). Professor Mirzoeff's work explores intersecting themes in Visual Culture, Cultural Studies, Contemporary Art and New Media, and
Disability Studies.

Jennifer A. González is Associate Professor in the History of Art and Visual Culture department at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her scholarship has been published in numerous journals, including "Aztlán," "Frieze," "Bomb," "Camera Obscura," and "Art Journal." Her book Subject to Display: Reframing Race in Contemporary Installation Art, published in 2008, was a finalist for the Charles Rufus Morey Book Award. Professor González's work explores the representation of the human body and its relation to discourses of race and gender within a range of visual contexts, including digital art.
