Studio C (UCSC)

Presented by:
Film and Digital Media

Yours in Sisterhood is a new documentary film from UC Santa Cruz professor Irene Lusztig, inspired by letters that were sent in the 1970s to the editor of Ms. Magazine, America’s first mainstream feminist magazine. The film documents hundreds of strangers in communities all around the U.S. who were invited to read aloud and respond to the letters. The intimate, provocative, and sometimes heartbreaking conversations that emerge from these spontaneous performances make us think critically about the past, present, and future of feminism—particularly in the aftermath of the 2016 election.

Yours in Sisterhood is a collective portrait of feminism now and 40 years ago. It is a project about time travel, embodied listening, empathy, public discourse, and the lost art of letter writing.

There will be introduction and discussion with director Irene Lusztig (Film & Digital Media), Bettina Aptheker (Feminist Studies), Megan C. Moodie (Anthropology), and Madhavi Murty (Feminist Studies).
