Mónica Andrade & Stephen Richter: Marqués

A Narco Macbeth
The death of Don David (Duncan)

Digital Arts New Media MFA candidate Mónica Andrade and Theater Arts Department MA graduate Stephen Richter reimagine classic tragedies to address current social issues through multimedia performances.  UCSC Theater Arts brought in alumnus Erik Pearson to direct Marqués, a Narco Macbeth, a high-octane bilingual adaptation of Shakespeare's classic tale of love, betrayal, murder, and madness, set in the world of Mexico's warring narcocartels. In this retelling, an architect and his wife fight for their survival in a deadly game of kings, witches, and kingpins in the land where no good deed goes unpunished.

Mónica Andrade is an award-winning Mexican filmmaker, projection designer and playwright based in Santa Cruz, CA. Her works are located at the intersection of classical drama and contemporary social issues. She is part of MindFabrik Collective and is currently in development of GO–a Guantanamo Othello. Some of her other works include experimental films, hybrid/multimedia theater productions, interactive/identity drama (ID), photography, projection design, and documentary work.
