The UCSC Music Department and the Arts Division are pleased to present the 2017 Pacific Rim Music Festival, in conjunction with the National Gugak Center of Korea and the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of the Republic of Korea.

This year's closing concert, "Living Tradition," features Creative Traditional Orchestra of National Gugak Center, conductor CHUNG Chi-Yong, and new works by BAEK Dae-Ung, Chinary Ung, David Evan Jones, Edmund Campion, George Lewis, LEE Geonyong, Shih-Hui Chen, and New York Philharmonic’s Very Young Composer’s program, including Madeline Schmidt and LEE Sangjin.

The festival theme is FROM THE ROOT TO THE LIVING TRADITION and features a special collaboration with the Creative Traditional Orchestra of the National Gugak Center of Korea (NGC). It represents a historic presentation of world premieres by several American composers writing for the Korean Traditional Orchestra. This marks the first time the NGC has presented a program of this kind outside of Korea. Professor Hi Kyung Kim, Artistic Director.

Traditional music and nearly 40 world premieres are presented in five free concerts featuring the 55-member Creative Traditional Orchestra of the National Gugak Center, the Center's Chamber Ensemble, the Borromeo String Quartet (New England Conservatory of Music), the New York New Music Ensemble, and Festival Ensemble Korea.

All five concerts are offered free and are open to the general public. Concerts start at 7:30PM with *exception of the closing concert on Sunday, October 29 at 3:00PM*.
Parking permit required. Available at the event (cash only).
