Collaborative Projects

Collaborative Projects

These awards are intended to encourage collaboration beyond the confines of particular departments and disciplines, both within the arts and between the arts, humanities, social sciences, and sciences. The award supports collaborative work whose interdisciplinarity is essential to the project’s conceptualization and that draws upon techniques, methodologies, and media from multiple disciplines for its execution. Up to five awards will be made to support collaborative projects. Ladder rank faculty, lecturers, and staff with PI status may apply for these awards. Eligible projects include:

  1. research clusters, conferences, symposia, exhibitions, and performances at UCSC or in the local community
  2. partnerships with another faculty member, teaching artist, or community organization to create an interdisciplinary, cross-departmental or cross-institutional component for a remote or in-person course (funds cannot be used for stipends for course instructors-of-record)
  3. initiatives to bring visiting scholars and arts practitioners to campus for collaborative research (where appropriate, such scholars may be appointed ARI Visiting Fellows)*

A complete application should include:

  • a project description (2-3 pages, double spaced, see instructions below)
  • a preliminary budget that includes some indication of other campus funding, and/or co-sponsorship by departments or other campus units (briefly explain any budget items that are not self-explanatory; ARI does not fund equipment costs with this award)
  • a brief curriculum vitae (2 pages maximum) of the principal investigator

* If you are proposing a visiting artist or scholar, please follow the application instructions below:

Allocations for Visiting Artists will generally fall in the $2,500 - $5,000 range, depending on the length of stay and the national reputation of the proposed Visiting Artist. ARI will also undertake the administrative and clerical work needed to keep the projects running smoothly. This includes: assistance contacting visiting artists, negotiating contracts, organizing travel and accommodation and publicity.

Visiting Artist Application: All applications should include:

  1. A fully completed cover sheet
  2. A résumé of the proposed artist or group and a host venue agreement form if resources beyond normal teaching and lecture spaces are required.
  3. A letter of interest/intent from the artist.
  4. If the project features a crucial collaborative component with another campus department, please submit a supporting letter(s) from key collaborators.
  5. A detailed description of proposed activities (2-3 pages double-spaced), including:
