Job Descriptions

The primary objective of all Audience Services Crew members includes the following:

  • Welcome the campus community and the general public as they participate in and engage with events presented or sponsored by the Arts Division and other entities in Arts venues.

  • Provide a welcoming and safe environment for audience members to fully enjoy the event and to enjoy their overall experience at UC Santa Cruz.
  • Adhere to the Arts events priorities: Safety; Professionalism; Customer Service; and Audience Experience.

Usher (USH)

USH DUTIES: EVENT ASSISTANCE (100% of duties)

  • Provide services to audience members in the preparation and production of events.
  • Greet guests, scan tickets, monitor admission, usher guests to seats, admit late arrivals.
  • Assist with parking, concessions, merchandise, and other activities, depending on the event.
  • Provide excellent customer service.
  • Answer questions and be welcoming of all.
  • Be attentive to audience and crew safety.
  • Be prepared for evacuation or other response in the event of emergency.
  • Other duties as assigned.

USH SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES

  • Available to work evenings and weekends.
  • Available to work during the final 3 weeks of each academic quarter.
  • Work effectively in a professional setting.
  • Dress requirement: neat, professional appearance is required; all Audiences Services crew members are required to wear a white top, black bottoms, and black shoes on the job.
  • Ability to check email and online work schedule on a daily basis.
  • Ability to learn and operate electronic ticket scanners.
  • Additional preferred skills, knowledge, and abilities including the following:
    • Interest in the Arts and live performance / presentation.
    • Paid or volunteer experience at concerts, plays, lectures, movie theater, or events venue is preferred.
    • Understanding of music or theater performance and presentation.
    • Certification in CPR and first aid is not required, but preferred.

Event Manager (MGR)

MGR DUTIES: EVENT MANAGEMENT (approx. 50% of duties)

  • The event manager is responsible for the smooth operation of the “front of house” and for the admission of audiences in Arts Division venues and other facilities as assigned. Front of house includes the entry, lobby, and seating areas of the Mainstage, Second Stage, eXperimental Theater, Recital Hall, Digital Arts Research Center, and other venues.
  • Event managers supervise the admission, seating, and exiting of audiences—and sometimes other activities occurring before, during, or after the event.
  • Assigns duties to one–12 students and/or volunteer ushers at events.
  • Adheres to maximum room capacity limits and maintains open exits for audiences.
  • Adheres to fire and safety regulations, and university and divisional policies.
  • Coordinates with other event managers and crews including the venue managers and stage crew, TAPS, ticketing, Arts Division staff, and others as assigned.

MGR DUTIES: ADMINISTRATION (approx. 50% of duties)

  • Meets with supervisor and co-managers on a weekly basis.
  • Prepares for events by communicating with directors, stage managers, and various campus units to ensure adequate event staffing, parking attendants, concessions, etc., as needed per event.
  • Completes administrative functions at events including detailed event reports for each shift, usher evaluations, safety reports, and others as needed.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and cleanliness of the house manager offices.
  • Participates in creating and leading trainings.

MGR SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES

  • Must have front-of-house manager or event planning experience, or the equivalent, including the following:
    • Mature individual with the ability to provide leadership and who works well with people of all ages and backgrounds.
    • Experience making independent decisions, handling details, and working calmly under pressure.
    • Must be exceptionally reliable and punctual and have both daytime as well as evening & weekend availability.
  • Must also meet all the qualifications of the Usher position, which the House Manager supervises.
  • Additional preferred skills, knowledge, and abilities including the following:
    • Paid or volunteer experience at concerts, plays, lectures, movie theater, or an events venue is preferred.
    • Understanding of music or theater performance and presentation.
