Open art studio welcoming a new generation of artists

Every quarter the Art Department opens its doors for a rare look into student creativity. The upcoming open studio session on March 14th, located in the Elena Baskin Visual Arts Studios, will showcase the future of art and art practice. This free event will run from 12PM – 4PM, and welcomes the larger Santa Cruz community to come enjoy.

Throughout this quarter students worked in mediums including drawing, painting, print media, sculpture, photography, environmental art, and electronic art and new media. This showcase in excellence demonstrates the diversity and skill of the student body that has worked diligently to hone its skills.

Elliot Anderson, the Chair of the Art Department says: “Open Studios is an exciting opportunity to experience the creative talents and achievements of UCSC Art Department’s graduate and undergraduate students.”

Alumni from this department have gone on to create groundbreaking works that have been present art internationally. Examples include: Annalivia Martin-Straw (Porter ‘23, Art) who recently had work at the SFMOMA and  Laurus Myth (‘09, BFA Painting & Art) who received a grant worth more than $100,000 from the San Francisco Art Commission.

Students are led to success by renowned professors who have won prestigious awards in their respective fields and are recognized nationally and internationally for their outstanding work. Through the leadership of Arts Division Dean Celine Parreñas Shimizu and Art Department Chair Elliot Anderson students are pushed to embrace their identity through excellence in art practice.

The upcoming open studio is a look at the future of art making, and a rare opportunity for a first glimpse at how excellence in the arts can benefit a community. Anderson encourages the public to join the festivities saying “Please join us to support our outstanding young artists and celebrate their incredible successes.”
