Position: Museum Education Summer Intern

Type: Part-Time (10 hrs per week)

Compensation: $1500 per quarter

Term: Summer 2018 (runs 10 weeks)

Location: San Jose, California

JOB SUMMARY:

Support the Education department in the development of education program materials and documentation of program results for grant reports and evaluation related to a series of significant grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the California Arts Council in support of the San Jose Museum of Art’s (SJMA) award winning education programs. The intern will work closely with the Manager of Youth Programs, on work projects as well as the Museum’s Director of Grants, with an eye on modeling the collaborative work done in grant management and adminsitration. A strong focus will be on mentorship and seeing that the intern will be introduced to various departments throughout the Museum, as well as getting in-classroom time with teaching artists as an observer to document our processes.

Project-based work (partial):

  • Finish Documentation on the Sowing Creativity program for 2018-2019 school year. Completed lesson plans need to uploaded into template, formatted as needed, edited and proofreading.  Eye for detail essential.
  • Design layout for final curriculum packages for Sowing Creativity teacher/funder handbook: Investigating Perception and Show Your Work: Math+Art stands.
  • Help to print, assemble and organize all education materials, booklets, and binders needed for 2018-2019 training sessions, teacher conferences, and summer camps.
  • Review current webpages and find/collect new content (photos, etc) to update education program pages for 2018-2019 school year.
  • Observe and document Summer Camp program for future grant opportunities.
  • Help to research, design and develop Pre and Post visit activities for Let’s Look at Art Program (K-5) that encourages more looking at art.
  • Additional duties as assigned

Desired outcomes/goals based on tasks and responsibilities to include:

  • Understanding for communications needs in supporting Education and Development department as part of significant grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the California Arts Council in support of the San Jose Museum of Art’s (SJMA) award winning education programs.
  • Appreciation for collaborative nature of interdepartmental work as part of signature Museum program, working closely with the Manager of Youth Program, as well as the Museum’s Grant Officer.
  • Opportunity to meet and witness the work done by professional evaluation teams , in this case Rockman et al: http://rockman.com/ (hired by SJMA for their evaluative services).
  • Chance to learn from  in-clssroom visits as part of SJMA education programs, the largest in-classroom arts educator in Santa Clara County.

Minimum Qualifications:

Proven ability to work independently; meticulous attention to detail; ability to function effectively as team member and a willingness to participate in activities and assignments that help meet the goals of and objectives of the department; strong organizational skills.
