El Sistema 

Position: Music Student Teacher

Type: Part-Time (9 to 10 hrs per week)

Compensation: $12 to $15 per hr (based on experience)

Term: Fall 2019 (August-December)

Location: Santa Cruz, California

JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for assisting beginning music exploration for El Sistema at Gault Elementary School. The intern will ensure varied musical experiences, assist pre-orchestra and ensemble activities under the supervision of El Sistema music faculty and support each child holistically. They will support the El Sistema philosophy and methodology and help facilitate community and family involvement. The instruments and the program are free to all participating students as long as they uphold their contract to take care of the instrument and maintain excellent attendance in El Sistema Santa Cruz.

As an El Sistema faculty member, responsibilities include:

  • Follow a curriculum, pedagogy and culture inspired by the ideals of El Sistema.
  • Teaching 3 times a week (3 afternoons/week from 3:00pm to 6:00pm)
  • Team teaching and assisting with creative ensemble classes.
  • Attending El Sistema professional development sessions.
  • Preparation and communication with other music teachers, Program Coordinator, Executive Board, parents and the El Sistema Santa Cruz team.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrate excellent musicianship and artistry as a teacher/performer
  • Leader in behavior management with large groups of students
  • Strong commitment to El Sistema’s philosophy of social change through music and the mission of El Sistema Santa Cruz
  • Four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent experience prefered; post-graduate degree or equivalent experience a plus
  • Strong knowledge of music pedagogy and curriculum; experience with Orff; certification preferred
  • Experience leading ensembles
  • Experience working with children from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds; experience working in underserved communities
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Interest and ability to be a motivational mentor and role model for students, parents, and peers as an artist, teacher and citizen
  • Ability to work under frequent observation
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus.
