Internship: ITVS (Independent Television Service)
As a first generational student from a low-income family, opportunities like the CEI program do not arise often.
Growing up in San Diego as the youngest of eight, Leah is not only leading the way in her family with being the first to attend college, but now she’s on her way to intern with ITVS in San Francisco, which partners with independent filmmakers to help fund their documentary films. She looks forward to learning about how to fund a film, write grants, and connect with like-minded professionals in the film world.
“I’m hoping that my experience with ITVS will last a lifetime,” she says. “I know I will thrive in their environment and I plan to learn as much as I can during my internship.” She’ll be working on projects including ITVS’s Film Orientation Week which is held every summer for the filmmakers that have been awarded funding.
Outside of school, Leah enjoys visiting her very large family whenever possible and while at home hosts evenings where friends get together to write poetry, collage, and paint. “Every quarter I host and curate an open mic/open house event. This is a place for all friends to get together in a garage, backyard, or living room to view each other’s artworks and listen to any talent someone may want to perform. The event has grown quite a bit since the first one and thus has become my favorite nights of the year.”
