Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) - Position #1

Position: Registration Intern

Type: Part-Time (Flexible, Primarily Thursday and Friday not to exceed 20 hrs per week)

Compensation: $16.50 per hour

Term: Summer 2018 (runs 11 weeks)

Location: Oakland, California

JOB SUMMARY:

The Registration Intern will participate in the processing and care of the OMCA’s collection, working closely with OMCA registrars to learn best practices and museum standards in collections management. The intern will support the registration department with accessions, loans, collections documentation, object handling and data reconciliation. The intern will gain familiarity with the CollectionSpace (OMCA’S collections management system). Special projects may include acetate negative rehousing, processing, digitizing, cataloging, and preparation for move to cold storage; collections moves and rehousing; and collections management approaches for objects with poor documentation.

Educational Objective:

Through this internship we will to provide learning opportunities and hands-on experience in the areas of museum artifact handling and storage practice, and photograph preservation. The intern will gain additional knowledge related to registration and collections activities and have the opportunity to work with curatorial and conservation staff.

Under the close supervision of the Registrar the intern will learn about and gain direct experience in:

  • Inventorying collections objects and creating accompanying documentation
  • Creating and editing digital catalog records
  • Tracking and updating object locations
  • Rehousing collections objects in archival housing
  • Digitizing and photographing collection objects
  • Assisting with management of collection records

Requirements:

  • Interest in Registration and Collections field in a Museum
  • Current student in an accredited Museum Studies four year or graduate studies program
  • Basic experience with museum object handling
  • Attention to detail and strong organization
  • Familiarity with PC & Macintosh platforms, skills in MS Office and Google Suite
  • Collections experience in a museum setting strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with collections management software preferred
  • At least 18 years of age

Position: Public Engagement Program Intern 

Type: Part-Time (20 hrs per week)

Compensation: $16.50 per hour

Term: Summer 2018 (runs 11 weeks)

Location: Oakland, California

JOB SUMMARY:

The Public Engagement Program Intern will participate in and support program administrative research, development, implementation, and reporting of the cross-disciplinary intergenerational program platforms. Public Engagement programs range from intimate hands-on family art activities on and offsite, to large-scale festivals, ranging from scholastic topics to informal education participatory activities. Skill building opportunities in production and logistics planning, artist liaison responsibilities, marketing/communication materials, in addition to collaboration, cultural and community engagement practices for intergenerational participation. Special projects will include the July Park Jam for the RESPECT: Hip Hop Style & Culture special exhibition, preparation for the Annual Days of the Dead cultural community celebration, and Friday Nights @ OMCA.

Educational Objective:

Through this internship we will provide learning opportunities and hands-on experience in the areas of multi-disciplinary event/program management for diverse audiences. The intern will gain additional knowledge related to program development, implementation, documentation, visitor engagement, artist liaison responsibilities, in addition to the opportunity to work with community collaborators, education, operations, and curatorial museum staff.

Under the close supervision of the Public Engagement Program Manager, the intern will learn about and gain direct experience in:

  • Program Development: research and development
  • Program planning, tracking and logistics
  • Contracting and managing artist, program performers and participants
  •  Collaboration, cultural and community engagement practices
  •  Post program documentation and evaluation

Position: Preparation and Production Intern

Type: Part-Time (20 hrs per week)

Compensation: $16.50 per hour

Term: Summer 2018 (runs 11 weeks)

Location: Oakland, California

JOB SUMMARY:

The Preparation and Installation Intern will work as part of a team that constructs, installs and maintains museum exhibits. The intern will learn best practices and museum standards for exhibit fabrication, installation and maintenance. The intern will gain familiarity with specialized skills used in the production of museum exhibits including wall preparation and painting, woodworking, art handling, transportation of collections, graphics production, frame-shop techniques and mount-making.

Educational Objective:

Through interaction with museum professionals and hands on experience the intern will learn museum standards for wall painting, basic art handling, basic woodworking, installation of graphics, maintenance of exhibits and transportation of collections. They will gain knowledge about the different types of preparation techniques and skills used in a museum setting.

Under the close supervision of Preparator Supervisor, the intern will learn about and gain direct experience in:

  • Assisting with weekly maintenance of exhibits in all gallery spaces (Art, History, Natural Sciences)
  • Assisting with scheduled exhibit and collections rotations
  • Assisting with transportation of exhibit and collections materials

Requirements:

  • Interest in developing skills and experience in the Production, Installation and maintenance of museum exhibits
  • Ability to focus on detailed work for several hours at a time
  • Ability to work as part of a team performing physical work
  • Ability to work within established guidelines for safety of both people and museum collections
  • Some experience working with hand tools and an interest in developing skills related to mount making, wall patching and painting, graphics installation

Position: Exhibit Experience Development Intern

Type: Part-Time (20 hrs per week)

Compensation: $16.50 per hour

JOB SUMMARY:

This position will support the research, development and implementation of in-gallery visitor experiences such as object interpretation, interactive exhibits and visitor-contributed content opportunities.

Educational Objective:

Learn about the planning and development of museum exhibits, including:

  • Team roles and responsibilities
  • The phases of the development and design process
  • Strategies for meeting the needs of different types of learners and audiences, including ADA guidelines and interpretive approaches for informal learning environments
  • Strategies for interpreting art, history and natural science information to museum visitors in creative and engaging ways
  • Resources for further research and learning about museum exhibit development

Under the close supervision of the Associate Director of Experience Development, the intern will learn about and gain direct experience in:

  • Participating in exhibition and core gallery core teams and contributing to the development, implementation and documentation of gallery renewal or improvement projects
  • Providing assistance with experience development projects including object, prop, image and media research
  • Considering visitors of different ages, interests and abilities, and strategies for meeting their needs
  • Participating in the development and testing of exhibit prototypes
  • Contributing to exhibit Interpretive Plans; writing exhibit descriptions and experience briefs

Requirements:

  • Undergraduate (minimum two years matriculation) or graduate student in art, history, natural sciences, education, American studies or museum studies
  • Interested in people and how they learn
  • Excellent communication skills, experience writing

Position: Learning Initiatives (Education) Intern

Type: Part-Time (20 hrs per week)

Compensation: $16.50 per hour

Term: Summer 2018 (runs 11 weeks)

Location: Oakland, California

JOB SUMMARY:

OMCA's school and community programs are a vital part of the museum. The Learning Initiatives Intern will participate in implementing summer programming, supporting development of resources for the docent tours, curriculum development, educational program planning, and development of educational tools to assist visitors in making connections to the exhibitions. The ideal candidate is a current student in Education, Ethnic Studies, Museum Studies, Art History, Anthropology, or a related field with work experience in an education, environmental, cultural or community arts setting.

Educational Objective:

Through this internship we will provide learning opportunities and hands-on experience in the areas of museum program development, implementation and evaluation. The intern will gain additional knowledge related to communications, volunteer management, and public programs and have the opportunity to work with families, volunteers and education programming staff.

Under the close supervision of Learning Initiatives/Education staff, the intern will learn about and gain direct experience in: 

  • Assisting with preparing program supplies and spaces for summer programs
  • Assisting with program implementation, including supporting educators in teaching and leading program activities across disciplines and media
  • Conducting research that supports program development, culturally relevant teaching practices, and audience development
  • Reporting on research and program implementation to support fundraising efforts

Requirements:

  • A passion for OMCA mission and engagement with low-income and communities of color
  • Knowledge of and/or interest in informal education practices including curriculum writing, lesson planning, and critical pedagogy (useful but not required)
  • Excellent interpersonal communication
  • Experience working with children and/or customer service
  • Multidisciplinary interest in California Art, History, and Natural Sciences
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment while meeting deadlines
  • Familiarity with Macintosh platforms, skills in MS Office and Google Suite
  • Must be self-motivated and able to take initiative on projects
  • Must be at least 18 years of age

Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) - Position #6

Position: Director’s Office Intern

Type: Part-Time (20 hrs per week)

Compensation: $16.50 per hour

Term: Summer 2018 (runs 11 weeks)

Location: Oakland, California

JOB SUMMARY:

The Director’s Office Intern will provide administrative and project management support to the Museum’s Executive Director, Executive Coordinator, and Board of Trustees. The intern will perform duties such as compilation of Board materials (i.e. rosters, committee descriptions, event schedules, etc.), will assist with staff events and learning programs provided through OMCA-You, and will provide project management support for special initiatives. In Summer 2018, the focus in project management will be on planning for the Museum’s 50th Anniversary in 2019.

Educational Objective:

Through this internship, students will learn about the inner workings of Museum executive and volunteer leadership. The intern will gain knowledge about non-profit governance, organizational strategic and management, and will have broad exposure to a wide range of Museum functions with which the Executive Director and Executive Coordinator interact on a daily basis. In Summer 2018, the intern will have particular exposure to project management for a large institution-wide initiative and will interface with staff in a variety of departments including Exhibitions, Public Programs, Development, and Facilities.

Under the close supervision of the Executive Director, the intern will learn about and gain direct experience in:

  • Coordinating interdepartmental project meetings and taking notes
  • Preparing governance materials and documents
  • Performing online research about other museums and organizations
  • Coordinating staff education and social events
  • Preparing visual presentations
  • Editing and preparing documents for distribution internally and externally

Requirements:

  • Interest in non-profit institutions and cultural organizations
  • Experience with MS Office and Google Suite platforms, particularly Word, Powerpoint, and Google Docs
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Comfort with working with a wide range of people, from Museum staff, to Board members, to members of the public
  • Some experience in coordinating meetings or events (such as school clubs) is helpful
