Wind Ensemble – featuring “Anna’s Gift: The Way of Passion”

The Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Nathaniel Berman, performs Festive Overture by Dmitri Shostakovich, A Solemn Music by Virgil Thomson, and Anna’s Gift: The Way of Passion by Andrés Martín, featuring Barry Green (solo double bassist) and Mary Tarbel-Green (narrator).

Anna's Gift is a fifty-five minute story about a musician named Anna was written for solo bass, concert band, and narrator, and includes background visuals. The story takes place ten years after Anna was inspired to become an artist from her studies with retired Tai Chi Master Chen. The piece recounts the  emotional journey of a gifted concert bassist who is longing for love and fire in her music and her life. Story by Alan Scofield. Concept and video by Barry Green

Barry Green, a native Californian, served as Principal Bassist of the Cincinnati Symphony for 28 years, and more recently Principal Bassist of the California Symphony and the Summer Symphony of Sun Valley, Idaho. As former Executive Director of the International Society of Bassists, he is currently living in San Diego while teaching at UC Santa Cruz and is active as a bass soloist, clinician, and motivational speaker.
