Part of University of California, Santa Cruz’s groundbreaking music education, means ensuring students have a chance to perform. All winter quarter students have strived to perfect their sound. Their work will culminate in a series of performances through February and March.
UC Santa Cruz’s dedication to arts excellence, especially in music, is demonstrated through their award winning professors and alumni such as alumna Gillian Welch (Porter ’90, fine arts) who recently made headlines for winning a Grammy for her album, Woodlands. Their international collection of award-winning music professors span genres and pass invaluable knowledge and skills onto their students.
The upcoming student performances showcase excellence in performance skill, and provide a unique opportunity to get a first glimpse at the future of music. Some of these concerts will include professional musicians. For example, the UCSC Big Band We will feature the award winning Bay Area vocalist Nina Causey.
There will also be concerts from outside performers such as New Music Works. As opposed to a student showcase, this show will feature three Professors of Music: Willie Winant, Richard Roper and Amy Beal, the Music Department Chair. Thereby providing an opportunity for audiences to see the excellence of professional musicians on staff.
All concerts are held at the Music Center Recital Hall on campus (400 McHenry Road, Santa Cruz, California 95064) and are open to the public. Tickets are free for students and range from $5-$12 for community members. They can be purchased on Eventbrite.
