April in Santa Cruz: Yarn/Wire at the TENRI Cultural Institute

Over the past two decades, internationally renowned quartet Yarn/Wire (Russell Greenberg and Sae Hashimoto, percussionists; Laura Barger and special guest Julia Den Boer, pianists) have reinvented the early-modern two-piano and two-percussionist ensemble made famous by Bartok's immortal composition for those instruments. Commissioning widely, praised for "spellbinding virtuosity” (TimeOutNY), and hailed as "mesmerizing" (New York Times), the group energetically and passionately encourages new composers to push boundaries and explore new territory.

This year their residency at UC Santa Cruz has brought forth four distinctive new works from composers Seth Glickman, Ben Dorfan, Nina Barzegar, and Rodrigo Barriga. At the TENRI Institute, Yarn/Wire will feature a variety of their current repertoire from composers around the world, including Santa Cruz participants in their residency, and the work of UCSC Music Department faculty member Ben Leeds Carson.
