Improvising Across Idioms: Claudio Vega Ensemble and Jimmy Grant & Tim Kliphuis

Tuesday, March 14, 2023 - 5:00pm to Wednesday, March 15, 2023 - 7:30pm
UCSC Music Center
Presented by:
Arts Division
Music Department

This two-day event brings together two small string ensembles working within the musical tradition of improvisation: jazz manouche duo Jimmy Grant and Tim Kliphuis; and son jarocho musicians Claudio Naranjo Vega and Dolores Garcia.

After discussing and demonstrating their music in a recording session for the UC Santa Cruz music archives, making in-class appearances, and leading hands on clinics for students, the series culminates in a concert in which the invited artists present their individual music practices and negotiate their idiomatic differences in a collaborative performance. The clinics are open to UCSC students only and the concert is open to the public. Learn more about the artists here.

Improvising Across Idioms is organized by Ph.D. Candidate Nelsen Hutchison and Assistant Professor of Music Russell C. Rodríguez with grant funding from Porter College, the UCSC Music Department, and the UCSC Arts Research Institute.
