A free public lecture by industrial designer Darrin Caddes, part of the Creativity+Innovation series.

The concept of innovation is a subjective notion. For some, innovation is a breakthrough concept. For others, it can be improving a dysfunctional process or the art of transforming ideas into money. For those of us in the world of design it is all of those things, but the deeper current running through the work that we do and our greatest motivation for getting out of bed in the morning is the potential to create products and experiences that are not only relevant, but will effect end user on a deep emotional level. What is it that makes us love our phone, car or random gadget, gizmo or doohickey? Why is it that we have a tendency to care so deeply for some inanimate objects and not others and how can we harness that secret and apply it to other areas of our lives? In this lecture Darrin Caddes will take you on a guided tour under the hood of how Industrial Designers wrestle with this problem and try to create greater meaning and value in the products they develop.

This presentation is part of the series of free, public lectures in the Dean's Lecture Series entitled "Creativity and Innovation" (part of the course Art 80V: "Issues and Artists" taught by Associate Professor Lewis Watts). Arts Division Dean David Yager has selected nine speakers, all noted for their unique ability to bridge innovation and creativity within their professional career paths. The public is cordially invited. Admission is free. Parking $3.
