33rd Annual Pilipinx Cultural Celebration: "Maganda Kami"

Friday, April 19, 2024 - 7:30pm to Saturday, April 20, 2024 - 7:30pm
Theater Arts Mainstage (UCSC)

Presented by Bayanihan, a student-led organization at UC Santa Cruz

Lourdes Angeles-Diaz would do anything for her family, even if that means sacrificing who she is. The bills are piling high as her Lola’s medical condition worsens. While her mother works hard at her 9-5, Lourdes is searching for a way to help support her family too. Taking inspiration from her Lola’s favorite pastime, watching beauty pageants, Lourdes decides to revive the family legacy and take part in the local pageant in an effort to win $10,000 for her Lola’s medical bills. As the process goes on, Lourdes begins to learn more about herself and her family’s secrets. All while she questions if she has what it takes to become Miss Mariposa.

Through Bayanihan’s differing performance aspects, this story shares a tale of discovering oneself through familial and self-love.

ABOUT BAYANIHAN

“Bayanihan” directly translates to “community” in Tagalog. The term is derived from the traditions in rural areas of the Philippines where community members would come together to help physically pick-up a community member’s house and help relocate it. The act of “Bayanihan” represents coming together in order to accomplish something that may seem impossible to help fellow community members. The term “Bayanihan” hopes to foster the community we strive to be.

The mission of Bayanihan (formerly the Filipino Student Association) is to be a support organization that promotes unity and empowerment through the awareness of our diverse community. It strives to be a cultural resource for the community as well as to foster open forum based in mutual respect and understanding. Bayanihan works to promote a greater understanding and appreciation of the Filipino and Filipino-American experience through meetings and events that explore our identity, history, and culture.
