To mark the launch of Collective Museum, an innovative participatory exhibition by artist group Public Doors and Windows (PDW) spread across 50 sites at the UC Santa Cruz campus, the Institute of the Art and Sciences is excited to announce a tandem exhibition at the Mary Porter Sesnon Gallery. This exhibition opens on February 11, 2016 and displays sculptures of each site in the Collective Museum, made by students in A. Laurie Palmer's and Dee Hibbert-Jones’s Winter 2016 art classes, along with portraits of the students, faculty, staff, and alumni who provided the sites and stories that compose the museum.

Harrell Fletcher, Molly Sherman, and Nolan Calisch, the artists of PDW, collaborated with 50 students, faculty, staff, and alumni at UC Santa Cruz to make the Collective Museum. These diverse participants provided sites, stories, and objects and images about their personal experiences on the UC Santa Cruz campus. Together these sites and stories form the building blocks for an imaginative, experiential, and embodied museum about the university, the kinds of work that goes on here, the people who enliven it, and the landscape that envelops it. The campus communities and the broader public can experienceCollective Museum through signage identifying each site; a mobile, a GPS-linked website with first-person audio or textual testimony by each participant; a ‘museum catalogue ’replete with photographs and essays; and additional ‘museum walls' documenting the sites, spread throughout the campus.
Whether it is listening to a geologist’s take on the sinkhole formations on campus while viewing charts about geology, seeing the room where the first meeting was held to discuss sequencing the human genome, hearing students talk about the experience of interviewing people for an article in the City of the Hill Press about the need for gender neutral bathrooms, or learning about the links between Cathrine Sneed’s apprenticeship at UCSC’s Farm and her current work with previous offenders and at-risk youth through the Garden Project in San Francisco, a Collective Museum assembles unique people, places, research histories, and the landscape of UC Santa Cruz to create an exhibition like no other.
