UC Santa Cruz Satellite Reef Final Crochet-a-thon

Reef Crochet-a-thon
Saturday, April 8, 2017 - 12:00pm
Porter College Quad
Presented by:
Institute of the Arts and Sciences

This final crochet extravaganza will bring to a close six months of collective, creative effort to create the UC Santa Cruz Satellite Reef. Join the Institute of the Arts and Sciences for food, live music and crocheting companionship as we take this final opportunity to transform all remaining yarn donated to the project into fantastical coral. After this event, the crocheted coral will be installed at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center, ready for our opening on May 4th.

The UC Santa Cruz Satellite Reef is part of the Crochet Coral Reef world-wide reefing project (2005-present). Created by sisters Margaret and Christine Wertheim of the Institute for Figuring, the Crochet Coral Reef is a spectacularly beautiful, artistically complex, and socially powerful way to bring people together around a devastating ecological challenge—the survival of the coral reefs and marine ecologies throughout the world. Satellite Reefs have been hosted in cities across the U.S. and Europe, Australia, and the Middle East.

The UC Santa Cruz Satellite Reef is the latest whimsical and fantastical result of hundreds of people crocheting for months with huge quantities of colorful yarn and unfettered imaginations for the Crochet Coral Reef. UCSC students, faculty, and staff have stitched alongside community members from across Santa Cruz County to raise awareness about ocean health and collective action. Don't miss your chance to be part of this process.

This event is FREE and open to the public.
