UCSC Wind Ensemble - Experiments on a March

Wind Ensemble Wartuba
Sunday, December 4, 2016 - 3:00pm
Recital Hall, UCSC Music Center
Presented by:
Music Department

The UCSC Wind Ensemble, directed by Nathaniel Berman, presents music exploring the march tradition in wind band music. Ira Hearshen's "After 'The Thunderer'" transforms Souza's breezy march into a Wagnerian daydream; the ensemble then performs Wagner's own "Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral." Morton Gould's "Epitaphs", written for the West Point Band, weaves military band themes into a quasi-symphonic form. Charles Ives' "Country Band March" and Marcel Wengler's "Versuche über einen Marsch" (Experiments on a March) both take uptempo marches on a deconstructive journey, Ives creating joyful chaos, and Wengler employing increasingly avant-garde thematic variations.
