The UC Santa Cruz Arts Division community is so sorry to hear of the passing of Ruth Solomon, one of the legendary professors and original founders of the UC Santa Cruz Theater Arts Department which is now our new Department of Performance, Play and Design. Her immense talent and passion for modern dance motivated so many of our students to pursue their own dreams of becoming dancers and incorporating dance into various aspects of their lives. Professor Solomon was profoundly dedicated to helping others, volunteering for 39 summers at the Dance Medicine Program at Harvard University, where she taught, researched, and treated dancers. She was truly an incredible role model whose legacy will be felt in the department for generations.
Our hearts go out to her family, including her husband John Solomon and her children, Mardi Solomon and Rowan Solomon. We are so grateful for Ruth’s vital and inspiring role in the UC Santa Cruz Arts Division.
