Educating a new generation of media makers and scholars who meaningfully disrupt the industry with new perspectives and experiences.
Film + Digital Media at UC Santa Cruz
Film, entertainment media, and digital media are key technologies of our age and central engines of California’s economy. An investment in media education is a strategic investment in the state and its emerging demographics.
F+DM reflects California’s and the nation’s future, already predominantly BIPOC, first generation college students; many are LGBTQ+, from low-income families, non-traditional backgrounds, often rural. Armed with both technical skills and knowledge about media aesthetics, media industries, and strategies of representation, our students profoundly impact our state, our country and the world. We are the new majority, the new voices, the new storytellers.
How UCSC Friends Can Help
Facilities and equipment
Our students deserve the best facilities. Funding will update and improve our infrastructure including in-kind hardware and software as well as funds to create gathering spaces and additional state-of-the-art production facilities. Recognition opportunities abound, including a dedicated building to host our program, creating a “School of Film+Digital Media.”
Fellowships, research and travel stipends for our world-renowned MFA in Social Documentation and highly selective PhD in Film + Digital Media; scholarships, prize money for undergraduates, and internship opportunities for future career growth ensure accessibility for all students.
Reshaping the curriculum
Dedicated faculty positions, guest speakers, workshops, short-term visiting artists and scholars, and building an aesthetically and technically innovative program.
