Sesnon Speak Up: Lessons of the Moment

Wednesday, December 2, 2020 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm
online event
Presented by:
Sesnon Art Gallery (note: Use Mary Porter Sesnon Art Gallery instead)

A conversation with Isaac Julien and Jennifer Baszile. Moderated by Porter College Provost Gerald Casel with introductions by Shelby Graham, director and curator of the Mary Porter Sesnon Art Gallery.

Speak Up will encourage students to think critically about education and the arts—and about how they help us understand how to live in a pandemic in this current political and environmental moment.

UC Santa Cruz Distinguished Professor Isaac Julien is a filmmaker whose recent multi-screen installation, Lessons of the Hour, addresses the life of visionary abolitionist, statesman, and freed slave Frederick Douglass currently on view at the McEvoy Foundation for the Arts in San Francisco.

Jennifer Baszile, Interim Vice Chancellor for the Division of Student Affairs and Success, is an award-winning researcher and former professor at Yale University and author.

Gerald Casel is the Provost of Porter College and Associate Professor in the Department of Theater Arts at UC Santa Cruz. He is a dance artist, performance maker, and cultural activist. As an immigrant from the Philippines, he is proud to be a first-generation college graduate.

The Mary Porter Sesnon Art Gallery at UC Santa Cruz encourages interdisciplinary discourse through the lens of the arts.
